Why animals are in shelters

Where do shelter animals come from?

Half of the nearly eight million pets relinquished to shelters each year in the U.S. will be put to death, simply because there is no one to adopt them. Some are given to shelters because their owners can no longer afford them or move to a residence that doesn’t permit animals. Others are turned in because the owner becomes physically unable to care for the pet, or simply because the animal is no longer wanted. Still others are the victims of abuse or neglect.

Regardless of the reason they are placed into shelters, the overwhelming majority of these animals are suitable for adoption and ready for a new life. Dogs have a slightly better chance than cats to be re-homed, but adult pets in general are more likely to be put to death. Pets for Patriots exists to serve these animals and to help them get honorably adopted by our country’s loyal military men and women. We advocate for the adoption of all shelter animals, and of adult dogs and cats in particular.
