What you should know about shelters
There are an estimated 4,000-6,000 animal shelters throughout the U.S. Most are not-for-profit or municipal shelters, animal rescues, humane societies and SPCAs. There are for-profit shelters, breeders and pet retailers as well.
Adoption fees vary from a few dollars to a few hundred dollars, depending upon the facility, its location and overhead, and the medical needs of the animal before it can be put up for adoption.
Pets for Patriots works only with not-for-profit organizations. We help our member shelters adopt out adult pets and large dogs and place them into the homes of loving military members. Sadly, many of these animals are put to death simply because they are no longer puppies and kittens - the most popular adoptive pets.
