Alaqua Animal Refuge

About Alaqua Animal Refuge

Alaqua Animal Refuge offers dog and cat adoptions to Emerald Coast veterans through its partnership with Pets for Patriots, and will help them find their new best friends. The organization advocates for the general welfare and humane treatment of animals by providing shelter, prevention of pet overpopulation and adoption services, believing that every abused, neglected and homeless animal deserves a second chance.

Alaqua’s Unconditional Love Program (ULP) rescues unwanted dogs from neglect and abuse, uses prison labor to train them to be therapy dogs, and will offer them free of charge to agencies so that they can be used to benefit the wellbeing of a child or special needs individual. Dogs who to do not graduate with top honors will be used for a variety of situations and can fill many roles: from a wonderfully trained basic family pet, to a nursing home dog, or for companion animals for the elderly or special needs individual. This program benefits both the dogs and the prisoners, who learn new skills and are able to become certified as AKC Canine Good Citizen trainers.

Alaqua Animal Refuge welcomes monetary donations, as well as in-kind contributions of dog and cat food, cat litter, Nylabones and various shelter supplies; see their ‘current needs’ list for details. For a more hands on experience, become one of their valued volunteers or pet fosters.
