Sometimes a name is destiny. This is the case for a cat named Blanket and his impact on the disabled Navy veteran who rescued him.

Thank you to Operation Kindness for this first and most memorable adoption through our partnership, and to Skylar—Navy veteran—for sharing this welcome home story in her own words.

Cat meets dog

Blanket is doing really well! So well in fact, he’s surprised all of us.

When we initially went to meet Blanket he was very introverted and uninterested in us. He also was unfortunately declawed in both his front and back paws by his previous owners.Rescue cat blankets disabled Navy veteran with love and comfort

I had a lot of concerns that he would not feel secure in our home because of our dog Bowser.

Despite having a gentle demeanor, he is 83 pounds and probably would come off extremely intimidating to an already reserved cat like Blanket.

Coupled with the extra layer of vulnerability that comes with a cat who has been declawed, I had written him off as not a good match for my home.

My husband however, having owned cats for a large part of his life, was absolutely convinced that he was perfect for us. My husband was right!

“…purrs you to sleep”

I have never met an animal who is more affectionate than Blanket.

Because my disability keeps me home a lot, Blanket has grown extremely attached to me very quickly and is happy just to be in the same room.

He is really unbothered by the presence of our dogs and gets along especially with our smaller one.

His preferred sleeping spot at night is directly on me, or by my head. It’s a little bit like having a living personal heater that also purrs you to sleep.

The cat named Blanket

I have lived a life so far that has really been focused on dogs, having kept them growing up and then dedicating my Navy career to the Military Working Dog program.Rescue cat blankets disabled Navy veteran with love and comfort

I have come to realize that I am more of a cat person than I have given myself credit for.

Blanket is teaching me so much about what companionship with a cat is like in contrast to what I am used to with dogs, and I already can’t imagine not having him with us.

Thanks for what you guys do!

We really love our little guy, and he has lifted a heaviness off of myself and our household, which is not something I expected a cat to be able to do.

He makes our home feel complete.
