Background:
| Pet's Name | |
| Molly | |
| A little about me | |
| I'm 64 years old and I work as a mass spectrometer field service engineer. I have two children who are also vets. Daughter was a Navy E-6 and Bronze Star recipient from OIF. Son was an Army E-5 and Army Commendation Award recipient for service in Afghanistan. Military service is a family tradition going back to The American Revolution. | |
| My military experiences | |
| I served in the USAF as a Ground Radar Maintenance Technician (303x1) from 1972-1977. After tech school at Keesler AFB, MS. I was assigned to Dover AFB, DE. (1973-1975). Then on to Korat RTAB, Thailand and U-Tapao, RTNB, Thailand (1975-1976). Then to Loring AFB, ME. (1976-1977) | |
| My most memorable experience from my time in service | |
| My time in Thailand holds the most memories for me. I was working the midnight shift my first weekend in country. The lights were out in the radar shack and we were taking it easy. Sometime around 0300 the door flies open, lights thrown on and we are surrounded by Air Force security. M-16s at the ready. It turned out that they had trapped a group of Thai Communist sappers in the drainage ditches underneath the runway. The radar unit was their target. Welcome to Thailand! | |
| Why I chose to adopt a pet | |
| I chose to adopt a pet because after 42 years of marriage I was going through a divorce. Alone and a bit depressed, I was tired of coming home to an empty house. I was getting into a rut. | |
| Why I chose to adopt through Pets for Patriots | |
| I read about Pets for Patriots on the internet and decided to look into it. The best benefit from Pets for Patriots was the low to no adoption fees. Considering how some adoption agencies will charge upwards of $125, this was a huge benefit for me. | |
| How my honorably adopted pet has changed my life | |
| I adopted a 6 year old Jack Russell Terrier, Molly, that had obvious signs of abuse. Missing hair on her back and extremely shy. She was hesitant to come up to me initially, but she soon got over her fear. Molly saved my life, not the other way around. She was so full of life when I brought her home. The second week I had her, we had gone out for a walk. Something she really enjoyed. During this particular walk, she started heading out into the middle of the street. Normally I would pull her back and she would continue walking in front of me. Not this time. This time she walks behind me, wraps her leash around my legs and heads back into the street. Naturally, I went down. So, on our 2nd week together, Molly broke, fractured and dislocated my right shoulder. She never left my side though. Nine months later, while we were out walking again, Molly got between me and a charging German Shepherd that had gotten away from it's owner. So Molly saved my life twice. | |
| What I love most about my new pet friend | |
| I have had Molly for 4 years now. She has always given me unconditional love and has always been there for me when I was feeling down. Now it is my turn to return it. Molly was recently diagnosed with Cushing's disease and a mass has been discovered in her gall bladder. The prognosis is not promising. But I will be there for her as she has always been there for me. | |
| What I would tell other veterans or service members who might be thinking about adopting through Pets for Patriots | |
| Pets for Patriots is a great organization. They are here not only for us vets but for the animals also. They will constantly check with you to see how you are doing with your new best friend. | |
