Story Details

Background:

In May 2020 Darren, an Army veteran adopted three year-old Sadie from Lifeline at DeKalb County Animal Services. She's a large mixed breed dog.
A little about me
I'm a Police Officer with the Veterans Affairs Hospital. I'm currently helping veterans as well as receiving treatment for medical issues.
My military experiences
I entered the Army Reserve at 17 years old as a junior in high school. I am was the third generation military police to train at Fort McClellan, Alabama.
My most memorable experience from my time in service
My best experience was when I was assignment to 18th MP Brigade at Coleman Barracks in Mannheim, Germany. During time, I got promoted to Sargeant and my brother, who retired as an MP for 25 years was able to pin my Sargeant stripes on me.
Why I chose to adopt a pet
We just had lost our dog of 12 years, Sam. We were totally lost without a dog around the house. Sam was the first dog my son ever had and the only dog my daughter ever knew. Once Sam passed away, we knew we needed another dog.
Why I chose to adopt through Pets for Patriots
I just happened to run across the program as we were looking for a dog and though what a great program for veterans.
How my honorably adopted pet has changed my life
Sadie has brought some much joy to our family and she is a handful. Very good, smart dog that we learn more and more about each day.
What I love most about my new pet friend
Sadie is so observant about her surroundings. Nothing gets by her. She is protective about the house but loves every kid she comes in contact with.
What I would tell other veterans or service members who might be thinking about adopting through Pets for Patriots
Great program which helps you with cost of adoption and getting your new friend situated.
