About Bernie

Bernie officially retired on December 31, 2020, after a distinguished career spanning 20 years in the U.S. Navy, two years at Penn State University, and 18 years with FedEx.

As a Navy officer and pilot (P-3), Bernie operated around the world and had the privilege of commanding Patrol Squadron 40 (VP-40), where he led deployments to Japan and the Persian Gulf.

In 2002, Bernie returned to his alma mater, Penn State, where he built a statewide political advocacy network of alumni teams who worked with legislators on key university issues. Two years later, he transitioned back to aviation, joining FedEx in 2004. For the next 18 years, he flew international routes, delivering your packages around the globe.

Beyond his professional career, Bernie has been deeply committed to service. He has supported multiple veteran-focused nonprofits, including Knights of Heroes, which mentored children who lost a parent in military service, and the Freewheel Foundation, which assists disabled veterans.

Today, Bernie volunteers full-time at Penn State, helping establish the university’s adaptive athletics program. The first recruiting class arrived Fall 2025. He has collaborated across university departments, written grants, engaged business leaders, and lobbied for financial support—all to expand athletic opportunities for adaptive student-athletes.

A lifelong dog lover, Bernie first connected with Pets for Patriots in 2024 after winning a local BBQ competition. His victory directed the event’s donations to his chosen charity: Pets for Patriots.
